Daniel Lozano, M.D., Medical Director, Regional Burn Center

“I came to Lehigh Valley Hospital because the center’s clinical excellence is a perfect complement to my own special interests in burn prevention and research.”

Daniel LozanoWhen Daniel Lozano, M.D., decided to leave San Diego and come to Lehigh Valley Hospital and Health Network in 2004 as medical director of the Regional Burn Center, he was attracted to the center's high level of care. The burn center cares for about 400 pediatric and adult burn patients each year and has served as a regional referral center for about 100 referring institutions throughout eastern Pennsylvania since 1974.

"We have three surgeons in the burn center and that is very unusual anywhere in the country," Lozano says. "The patient care and support, from the surgeons to the nursing and support staff, are as good or better than anywhere in the country."

For Lozano, such clinical excellence is a perfect complement to his own special interests in burn prevention and research. His clinical and laboratory research has included nutrition and immunology in the burn patient, as well as the ability to culture skin in fibroblasts for wound coverage in the laboratory. His interest in education involves burn prevention programs that will reach first-time parents, as well as older children and older adults.

"When we put together clinical excellence, research and education, we will become the country's premier burn center," Lozano says. "The ultimate goal is to decrease the likelihood of being burned and for those who are, help them make the best possible recovery."
